The profession of architecture was once referred to as a profession that success comes late in your career. Why? This isn’t about the experience of “How” to do the job. But rather life experience. I had the opportunity to work with some of our senior partners as i was coming up the ranks. I witnessed first hand how life experiences translate to quality design. The senior partners used their life experiences to paint the vision of the design. They would relate the environments we were designing to real world locations. After all how would you design an environment like LKF in Hong Kong if you have never been there and experienced the energy of the place.
We would encourage designers to take extra time on business trips to experience the place. We would schedule dinners away from the hotel so we could experience the local culture. This all goes into the designer tool kit.
